MouthWatch Announces Teledentistry Innovation Awards Winners

MouthWatch recently recognized five pioneers in teledentistry during the third annual Teledentistry Innovation Awards, known as the Tellies.

The 2020 Tellie Awards were presented during a virtual event, according to a press release. The purpose of the Tellie Awards is to highlight the many ways teledentistry is being implemented across a broad spectrum of dental care, as well as to recognize forward-thinking dental providers who are realizing the full potential for connected dental care technology.

In addition to the Dentist/Specialist, Dental Hygiene and Oral Health Program (Non-Profit or Business) categories, teledentistry leaders were also recognized in two new COVID Response categories, COVID-19 Response/Provider and COVID-19 Response/Oral Health Program.

The 2020 Tellie Award winners are:

Dentist/Specialist: Scott Howell, DMD, MPH, A.T. Still University/Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health

Dr. Scott Howell developed an oral health program at the university and has trained more than 300 students in teledentistry. Students learn how they can use the technology to reach a diverse patient population and evaluate digital records collected via teledentistry.

During the pandemic, Dr. Howell had students participate in one-week public health rotations, where they worked with diverse patients, including children in detention, children and adults with special needs, low-income seniors, and men in rehabilitation/reentry programs.

Dental Hygiene: Jingjing Qian RDH, EA, Your Special Smiles PLLC

Jingjing Qian, RDH, EA, worked with her dentist, Dr. Brooke Fukuoka, to develop and implement a COVID response known as the Guided Oral Hygiene Program. Through the program, long-term care residents received oral care they wouldn’t have had access to otherwise. Caregivers were trained to gather information via teledentistry and then use live teledentistry interactions to help caregivers with patient-specific oral hygiene regimens. This was the only dental service many of these patients received for months during the pandemic.

Oral Health Program (Non-Profit or Business): University of Rochester Eastman Institute for Oral Health

The university has published significant studies on teledentistry and also has implemented teledentistry in oral health programs that provide care to underserved patients in the Greater Rochester, NY, region. The university’s deployment of teledentistry is part of its successful track record in designing, implementing and sustaining community-based oral health programs, including outreach programs that have been replicated nationwide.

COVID-19 Response/Provider: Barry Raphael, DMD, The Raphael Center for Integrative Orthodontics

Dr. Barry Raphael, a practicing orthodontist for more than 30 years, turned to teledentistry during the peak of the pandemic rather than pausing dental procedures and maintenance appointments.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he had already begun re-examining his traditional views on patient treatment and adopted a new integrative approach. With patient safety the top priority, he implemented teledentistry. Now, all intraoral photos are submitted remotely, new patient records are completed electronically, and all consultations are conducted through a web-based platform.

COVID 19 Response/Oral Health Program: Advantage Dental from DentaQuest Care Group

Advantage Dental understands the value of teledentistry and the role it plays in improving access to care and has long supported the technology through its outreach and mobile programs.

Advantage Dental recently rolled out teledentistry across more than 80 practice locations, which was critical to addressing urgent care needs during the pandemic. Through virtual consultations facilitated with their providers and member service representatives, patients had access to experienced clinical assistance when practices were only open for emergencies.

As practices reopened, Advantage Dental saw numbers reflect that their teledentistry platform improved the patient experience, saved time for patients and providers, and provided convenience for patients. The long-term vision to roll out teledentistry as part of Advantage Dental’s services is well underway.

“2020 presented significant challenges to dentistry and the world at large, but the year also marked a time of unprecedented growth and innovation in the teledentistry field,” MouthWatch CEO and founder Brant Herman said, according to the release. “We weren’t about to let a pandemic prevent us from recognizing this year’s Tellie Awards winners, so we hosted a great virtual event instead.  We congratulate and thank this year’s Teledentistry Innovation Awards winners for their commitment to using teledentistry technology to make a tangible difference in improving access to care.”
