Hinman and other Dental Meetings Canceled As Concerns Over Coronavirus Spread Continue to Grow

Major dental organizations have decided to cancel March meetings amid growing concerns of Coronavirus (COVID-19) spread.

The 108th Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting, slated for March 19 to 21 in Atlanta, is among the cancelled meetings, according to a press release.

“It was a very difficult decision to make, as we know it affects thousands of attendees and industry professionals who were planning to attend the meeting next week. But, the health, safety and well-being of our attendees, exhibitors, speakers and members are our highest priorities,” said Dr. Bob O’Donnell, General Chair for Hinman 2020, according to the release. “Our concern is not only for the health of everyone involved, but also the quality of event that we can deliver with the current logistical challenges we are facing. Hinman’s goal has always been to provide world-class continuing education and exhibits, and in the current climate, we will not be able to provide the experience that our attendees have come to expect from our organization.”

The meeting typically attracts more than 20,000 dentists, hygienists, assistants, students and other dental professionals. More than 400 companies exhibit at the annual meeting. This marks only the third time Hinman has been canceled.

Hinman will share plans for the 2020 program on its website and social media pages in the coming days. Information regarding registration refunds will be posted as well. Those with questions should contact the Hinman office at 404-231-1663.

The Academy of Osseointegration (AO) canceled its 35th annual meeting, which was scheduled for March 18 to 21, according to a press release. More than 3,500 implant dentistry professionals and 100 dental implant experts were expected to attend. The organization is moving ahead on plans for its 2021 meeting, which is scheduled for March 10 to 13 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando.

AO is in the process of refunding meeting registration fees, exhibit space rental fees, and sponsorships.

“Cancelling the Meeting was an unprecedented decision taken very seriously by AO’s Board of Directors,” AO Executive Director Kevin Smith said, according to the release. “After daily monitoring of the constantly evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, the Academy found it would be impossible to proceed with its 2020 Annual Meeting as scheduled.”

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) with input from the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR) made the same difficult decision, canceling its annual meeting that was set for March 18 to 21 in Washington D.C.

Anyone registered to attend the meeting will receive a full registration refund within the next 45 days, according to a press release.

The organizations recently published infection control guidelines in the Journal of Dental Research for dental practices and schools to follow during this outbreak. You can read more about that here.
