AAP Publishes First ‘Best Evidence Consensus’ Proceedings on CBCT

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recently published its first ever “best evidence consensus” (BEC) proceedings on CBCT, and determined that the technology has diverse applications for dental implant therapy and periodontal-orthodontic therapy.

The proceedings are the result of the AAP’s inaugural BEC meeting, which was held in Chicago in February, according to a press release. The AAP developed the BEC model to address emerging clinical topics in periodontology that have “insufficient evidence to arrive at definitive conclusions.” Using current published literature and the expert opinion of periodontal thought leaders, the BEC model provides clinicians with reasonable applications for newer technologies, such as CBCT.

The BEC proceedings answer focused questions that relate to the use of CBCT in various scenarios, including surgical management of patients requiring dental implants; determining risk to periodontal structures in patients requiring periodontal-orthodontic treatment; and adding clinical value to diagnostic assessment and treatment planning in managing patients with periodontitis.

A panel of more than 10 periodontists participated in the BEC, and determined CBCT has diverse applications for dental implant therapy and periodontal-orthodontic therapy and should be used when the benefit to the patient outweighs the risk. CBCT can not only help in planning these types of cases, but also facilitate interdisciplinary communication.

For patients with periodontitis, 2D full-mouth radiographs combined with clinical probing remain the gold standard, but CBCT may be beneficial in certain advanced cases.

The BEC proceedings appear in the October issue of the Journal of Periodontology (JOP).
