Western University Dental School to Receive $8.4 Million to Provide Care to Underserved Children

The First 5 LA Commission has awarded a $3.1 million contract to Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine to fund the first 19 months of a 5-year program to provide dental care to uninsured and underserved children. The full funding of the program is expected to be $8.4 million throughout the 5-year span, according to a press release.

The program will focus on getting children into the oral health care system by their first birthdays, while also providing oral health assessments, preventive care and dental health education. It will work to track patients over time to make sure they’re getting the care they need.

The program is funded by First 5 LA, a voter-created child advocacy organization that uses tobacco tax revenues to fund programs aimed at improving the lives of children in the Los Angeles area.
