Caries Detection Equipment

While the explorer is still widely used to evaluate a patient for caries, cutting edge caries detection systems are changing the way some practices screen and treat patients. Capable of detecting and assessing carious lesions earlier and in more locations, some caries detection units feature lasers that cause fluorescence of the tooth while others use transillumination to see through the enamel. Regardless of the specific detection technology being used, all of these systems can help you discover caries at earlier stages when minimally invasive treatment options might be applicable. While some detection technologies are integrated into intraoral cameras, other systems are standalone units. Regardless of which platform or detection technology you prefer, it is important for the entire staff to be properly trained to not only use the caries detection system, but also to explain the technology to patients.

DescriptionCapable of helping clinicians identify occlusal, interproximal and recurrent carious lesions, DEXIS CariVu™ uses patented transillumination technologyA bench-top version of the Canary System designed for use in laboratory settings, The Canary Lab allows for non-destructive analysis of defects and The DIAGNOdent Pen Caries Detection System is a hand-held laser caries detection aid that provides the same high detection accuracy as the DIAGNOdent.Designed to help clinicians detect caries, fractures and endodontic canals, the FUSION Transilluminator is powered by a focused LED beam using white

How it WorksA patented near-infrared light is used for transillumination which is captured by a camera and displayed in an image similar to a radiograph.A low-power, pulsating laser light to scans teeth and the fluorescence and the radiant heat are evaluated to detect caries up to 5 mm below the surface.Measures flourescence of tooth structure which increases with degrees of decay.Intraoral transillumination with a powerful light allows visibility through enamel.
