Proper Gingival Retraction and Isolation of the prepared tooth is critical to capturing the margins when taking a dental impression. When the margin is subgingival this becomes an even more critical step if the dental laboratory is going to be able to fabricate a properly fitting, esthetic restoration. Keeping the margins free of fluid is another important part of the process. Gingival Retraction and Isolation Materials can be divided into Gingival Hemostatic Agents, Gingival Retraction Cord and Caps, and Gingival Retraction Pastes and Gels. It is key to have the correct materials and protocol for retraction and isolation procedures.
