Study: Waterpik Water Flossers Improve Oral Health When Used with Oscillating Electric Toothbrush

A new study shows Waterpik Water Flossers can improve oral health when used with an oscillating electric toothbrush.

The four-week randomized controlled clinical trial found that while brushing with an oscillating power toothbrush alone did improve oral health, adding Water Flossers to the routine provided “significantly superior results for people with mild to moderate gingivitis,” according to a press release.

The study complements previously published research that shows improved oral health in patients who use Water Flossers along with a manual or sonic-powered toothbrush.

Seventy adults participated in the study. Participants were randomized and assigned to either the Waterpik® Water Flosser plus Oral-B® Pro 2000 with Precision Clean Brush Head group (WF), or the Oral-B® Pro 2000 with Precision Clean group (OR), to study the efficacy on the reduction of gum inflammation and plaque.

Results showed using a Waterpik Water Flosser in conjunction with the Oral-B Pro 2000 with Precision Clean Brush Head was 37 percent more effective in reducing gingival bleeding, 36 percent more effective in reducing gingival inflammation and 33 percent more effective in reducing plaque.

Participants also were asked to complete a questionnaire. Subjects in both groups said the Waterpik Water Flosser and the Oral-B Pro 2000 Toothbrush were easy to use and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. Ninety-one percent of participants who used the Waterpik Water Flosser in addition to brushing said they would continue to use the products after the study. Sixty percent of the brushing-only group said they would continue product use.
