Cochrane Review Finds Benefits in Colgate Total Toothpaste Ingredient

An evaluation by the Cochrane Oral Health Group found the triclosan/copolymer antibacterial ingredient used in Colgate Total Toothpaste provides clinical benefits to patients with no evidence of harmful effects.

The evaluation by the Cochrane Group looked at 30 studies conducted between 1990 and 2012 with a total of 14,835 participants randomized to either receive Colgate Total toothpaste with triclosan/copolymer or another fluoride toothpaste without the added antibacterial ingredient. The review found that after six or more months of use, patients brushing with the triclosan/copolymer toothpaste experienced a 22% reduction in plaque with a 41% reduction in plaque severity, as well as a 22% reduction in gingivitis and a 48% reduction in gum bleeding, according to a press release.
