Oral Health America Report Shows Older Americans Face Oral Health Challenges

Older Americans face numerous oral health challenges and a new website created by Oral Health America (OHA) aims to help them with education and access to oral care resources.

The new website, Toothwisdom.org was created in the wake of OHA’s recently released report “A State of Decay” which provides a state-by-state analysis of oral healthcare delivery and public health impacts on the oral health of older Americans. The report showed that more than half of the country was rated “fair” or “poor” when it comes to meeting minimal standards for providing dental care for older adults, according to a press release.

The report found there is a lack of oral health care coverage in much of the United States, which combined with a strained dental health workforce and deficiencies in prevention programs leads to problems such as persistent edentulism.

To combat these problems, the new website provides both education on oral health and access to oral health resources such as state-by-state links to dental care, social services and transportation. The site also features news and articles submitted by members of The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA).
