More Evidence Dental Bib Clips Can Harbor Bacteria Even After Disinfection

A significant number of dental bib clips are likely to harbor infectious bacteria even after being disinfected via standard procedures according to a report published by researchers from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and the Forsyth Institute.

The study, which analyzed 20 bib clips before and after use and disinfection in a hygiene clinic, found that 40% of the tested bib clips contained aerobic bacteria that can survive in oxygenated environments, and 70% of the tested clips contained anaerobic bacteria which do not live in the presence of oxygen, according to a press release. The results of this study line up with other published research showing that dental bib clips can contain bacteria from patients and clinicians even after being disinfected according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The new report, “Comprehensive Analysis of Aerobic and Anaerobic Bacteria Found on Dental Bib Clips at Hygiene Clinic” is being published along with the April issue of Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry.
