Study Shows Fluoride in Drinking Water Protects Adult Teeth

A study published in the Journal of Dental Research provides strong evidence that fluoride in drinking water is beneficial to the dental health of adults even if they did not drink fluoridated water while growing up.

The population-level study conducted by teams at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Adelaide, Australia found that drinking fluoridated water prevents tooth decay in adult regardless of age, according to a press release.

Data from 3,799 Australian adults was used in the study, and levels of decay were compared to fluoridation levels in the water of the areas they lived since 1964. A percentage of their life when fluoridated water was consumed was determined, and the data showed that people who lived in fluoridated communities for 75 percent of their lifetimes had up to 30 percent less decay than people who lived with fluoridated water for less than 25 percent of their lifetime.
