The Top 10 New Dental Products of 2018New things always bring an element of excitement, and that's why new dental products always receive so much attention from you, the Dentalcompare audience. Our new product news posts are the most popular type of news we post, and when we add something new to the product directory, it's worth the click to see the latest industry innovation.

As we take our look back at the most popular new products added to the site in the past year, the overall theme isn't shy about the spotlight. This list is all about digital dentistry with intraoral scanners and 3D printers dominating the list. Only one product in the top 10 isn't designed at least in part for CAD/CAM applications, and that product is actually a software application. This list is digital to the max, and that seems to be a good indicator of where this industry is headed.

Here are the Top 10 New Dental Products of 2018

10. CS 9600 Cone Beam Imaging System from Carestream Dental

CS 9600

Cone beam imaging is the type of technology that can change a practice. The ability to image, treatment plan, and educate patients with interactive 3D models and images truly reshapes a practice, and with its latest system, Carestream Dental created one of the most powerful and versatile imaging systems around. The CS 9600 does 3D imaging, 2D imaging, extraoral facial imaging, and even 3D model scanning for CAD/CAM dentistry. The system offers a wide range of fields of view and numerous pre-set imaging programs. A touchscreen control makes it simple to program and a slick, retractable seat makes this imaging system comfortable for patients and clinicians whether the patient is sitting or standing for the scan.

9.  TRIOS Move Intraoral Scanner from 3Shape

TRIOS Move

2018 was a big year for digital impression technology. More intraoral scanners made this list than any other single product category, and that's a testament to how far the technology has come, and how many different options dentists now have. With the Move, 3Shape continued their trend of combining market-leading technical capabilities with innovative design elements. This scanner captures digital impressions as quickly and with as much detail as previous TRIOS scanners, but the Move is really all about its innovative screen that is both nimble enough to be moved where clinicians or patients need it, and large enough to show the scans and images captured by the Move is the detail necessary for diagnostics, patient education, and treatment planning. Available in a range of handpiece configurations including wireless options, the Move is one of the most powerful and versatile intraoral scanners around.

8. VIZ Intraoral Scanner from Adin Dental Solutions

VIZ

Unlike the other digital impression systems to make this list, the VIZ is not an update to an existing scanner. Instead, it's a new offering that aims to be an ideal system for those new to digital dentistry. The VIZ is a straightforward scanning system that is designed for restorative dentistry. With multiple tips for patient comfort and access to all areas of the mouth, the scanner is designed for a range of clinical situations, and once scans are captured, this system is designed to send them to a range of 3rd party software applications for designs, so it can most likely connect to any dental lab, or a custom in-house CAD/CAM system.

7. Dentrix G7 Dental Practice Management Software from Henry Schein One

Dentrix G7

The only product to make this list that is not at least tangentially related to CAD/CAM dentistry is still a digital product, as practice management software is still the starting point for most digital dentistry journeys. Dentrix is one of the largest names in this category, so it makes sense the latest update got plenty of notice. This latest update to the software includes numerous integrations and enhancements designed to improve practice efficiency and allow more automated tasks to be handled within the software. One of the biggest improvements is the new Dentrix Smart Image module that makes incorporating images from almost any image solution almost native to the software. Dentrix G7 is even more of a practice hub than previous generations and practices that can unlock its full potential have a powerful tool at their disposal.

6. iTero Element 2 Intraoral Scanner from Align Technology

iTero Element 2

The original iTero was one of the first intraoral scanners, and the latest evolutions of the product seem to indicate that its staying power remains just as strong. While some of the original iTero design elements can be detected in its latest iteration, the Element 2 is actually the successor to the first major iTero update, the iTero Element. With the 2, the iTero gets faster scanning and sharper images with a design that is sleek, mobile, and put together with ergonomics in mind. A 21.5-inch screen is the center of the system and serves as both the control interface and the viewing screen. While Invisalign connections are native to the iTero, this scanner is able to handle a range of restorative, orthodontic, and other clinical challenges along with the clear aligner orthodontics.

5. glidewell.io CAD/CAM System from Glidewell Dental

glidewell.io

Open-architecture CAD/CAM solutions have been the direction of the technology's development for a while now, and while there are still plenty of end to end solutions, none has managed to bridge the gap between the possibilities of an open solution with the reliability of a system designed to work seamlessly. This system from Glidewell Dental is built to do just that. It starts with an iTero Element scanner for capturing digital impressions. From there scans can be sent to Glidewell or almost any other lab for production, or the scans can be sent to in-house design software. If the designs are produced in house they can still be sent out to Glidewell or another lab for production. Or, designs can be produced in-house on the fastmill.io mill. All of the components are designed to be plug-and-play solutions, so this is a digital dental platform ready to grow with a practice while offering a wide range of restorative, orthodontic, implant, and other applications.

iTero Element Flex

Not to be outdone by its iTero sibling, the portable and versatile iTero Element Flex brings all the benefits of the latest iTero scanner to a whole new form factor. This scanner is essentially the scanning wand which can be connected to a properly equipped laptop to create one of the smallest, lightest, and yet most full-featured, and powerful scanning solutions around. It essentially provides the same scanning capabilities and applications as the iTero Element 2, but adds additional mobility. Multiple laptop models are compatible, and the system includes a carrying case for the wand, stand and laptop to make this system stylishly portable.

2. MoonRay S 3D Printer from SprintRay

MoonRay S

Chairside 3D printers are becoming more common as the price has come down significantly, and the quality of the systems has improved. SprintRay's top of the line model the MoonRay S has been making its way into key dental practices all year, as digital dental pioneers try out printing their own surgical guides, models, and custom night guards. This type of production is faster, more accurate, and less costly than other workflows, and while once thought to be a technology years away from realistic use, this type of 3D printer is ready for work today, and the MoonRay S might just be the system to find its way to the countertop of many dental practices.

1. EvoDent DLP 3D Printing System from EvoDent
