Intracanal condensers, as well as endodontic pluggers, are used to compact gutta percha in the canal during a root canal procedure. These instruments can be either handheld or attach to a handpiece. Regardless of the style of condenser, it should be used to tightly pack the gutta percha for a completely obturated and sealed canal. Most condensers are made of stainless steel or a similar autoclavable metal, but some can be designed for single use. Be sure to find a style of condenser that is comfortable for you to use. Having several styles on hand can be helpful, as the instrument must fit the canal being treated.
