Endodontic Post Systems

Post systems allow for dental restorations that would otherwise be impossible because of inadequate tooth structure. A post is considered a foundation restoration because it enables build-up of tooth structure and root systems to allow for crowns. Post systems can be made up of various materials, including quartz, zirconia, carbon fiber, titanium, stainless steel, and glass. Posts can be prefabricated or cast for a custom fit. Prefabricated posts take less time to place, and there are many options to find a good fit. If there is not a prefabricated post that will fit the root canal correctly, one can be cast for an ideal fit. Post systems are radiopaque; this allows visibility of the post on an x-ray. A variety of posts should be kept on hand; this enables the dentist to choose the best fitting post and the best post material for each foundation restoration.
