Brought to you by Quantum Dental Technologies, The Canary System is a low-powered laser that allows for early detection of caries & defects in the tooth’s crystal structure not yet discernible on x-rays or by visual examination. It has created a new way of communicating with patients about the status of their oral health and what they can do to improve it.
A Canary exam provides audible and visual numeric measurements of tooth structure that engages the patient and helps them to understand the rationale for a proposed treatment plan. Patients love the verbal and visual feedback they receive from the Canary! They become familiar with their Canary Numbers and can see tangible results when their condition improves whether through better home care, remineralization therapy or early restorative treatment.
The Canary System examines the status of the tooth’s crystal structure and is not dependent on measuring bacterial by-products that produce fluorescence. These unique characteristics allow the dental team to detect decay and pathology in a vast number of clinical situations including:
- Around and beneath the intact margins of restorations including amalgam, composites and crowns
- Smooth surfaces
- Occlusal pits and fissures (including beneath stained areas)
- Around orthodontic brackets
- Interproximal regions
- Beneath dental sealants
The Canary can detect lesions as small as 50 microns up to 5 mm below the tooth surface; it can also detect cracks in enamel. As a carious lesion grows, the Canary number increases; with remineralization or appropriate restorative treatment, the Canary number decreases.
Over 60 papers published in peer-reviewed journals demonstrate Canary’s ability to detect and monitor carious lesions and cracks in teeth. www.thecanarysystem.com.
