USAF Dental Evaluation & Consultation Service

The USAF Dental Evaluation & Consultation Service (DECS) was established on 1 October 1976 (formerly USAF Dental Investigation Service) by then Air Force Regulation 162-7 to provide investigative guidance and assistance
for all USAF dental personnel. DECS consists of clinical, laboratory, and consultative capabilities maintained as a detachment of the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. DECS is located at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, IL along with the Naval Institute for Dental and Biomedical Research and the US Army Dental and Trauma Research Detachment. The organization has been set up specifically to solve operational problems and to evaluate methods, techniques, procedures, equipment, and materials as identified by military dental activities and by the office of the Air Force Surgeon General. In addition, DECS supports military medical centers and dental training programs by providing continuing education lectures and technical assistance for investigations that contribute to the training programs. DECS is currently guided by Air Force Instruction 47-101.
