Say Cheese, It Might Help Fight Cavities

Snacking on cheddar might be another great way to keep your teeth healthy and prevent cavities.

A recent study published in General Dentistry indicates that consuming cheese and other dairy products can raise the intraoral pH levels and could be providing protection against decay and dental caries, according to a press release.

The study involved 68 subjects between 12 and 15 years old who were divided into 3 random groups. One group was given cheddar cheese, one was given milk and the last group was given sugar-free yogurt. After consuming their dairy product for 3 minutes and swishing with water, the subjects had their pH levels checked at 10, 20 and 30 minutes. The pH levels for the milk and yogurt groups remained steady, but the cheese group saw a rapid increase in the pH level at each measurement.

Researchers are not sure if it was the chewing that generated saliva which raised the pH level or it is something in the cheese, but either way, they feel eating cheese appears to be a way to protect teeth.
