Diet Soda Causes Dental Decay Similar to Meth Mouth

When it comes to damaging teeth, drinking too much soda can be just as destructive as using methamphetamine or crack cocaine, according to a case study published in a recent issue of General dentistry, the peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry.

In the study Dr. Mohamed A. Bassiouny, DMD, MSc, PhD, compared the damage found on the teeth of three individuals, one who uses methamphetamine, one who used to use cocaine and one who drinks excessive amounts of diet soda. All three admitted to having poor hygiene regimens, and each of them exhibited severe erosion.

Dr. Bassiouny attributed the similar levels of decay to the high levels of acid found in meth, cocaine and both regular and diet soda. Based on the results of the study, the AGD recommends moderate soda intake with increased drinking of water, and either chewing sugar-free gum or rinsing the mouth with water following drinking soda.
