American Dental Association, OSAP Issue Responses to High Profile Oklahoma Infection Control Breach

In the wake of the recent news of a Tulsa, Okla., oral surgeon whose practice possibly exposed up to 7,000 patients to infectious diseases due to reportedly poor or non-existent infection control procedures, both the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) have issued statements providing resources on proper infection control practices and advice on talking to patients about this subject.

The ADA statement highlights the organization’s recommendation for dental practices to adhere to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines on infection control in dental settings, which can greatly reduce patient risks. The statement also encourages patients to ask their dentists about the infection control procedures in the practice.

The statement from OSAP highlights the severity of the reported violations in Tulsa, and stresses that dental practices should follow proper procedures and be prepared to explain them to patients. OSAP also recommends using the CDC guidelines and provides tips for talking to patients about infection control practices such as detailed explanations of the sterilization process, only opening sterilized instrument pouches when the patient is present and keeping a written infection control policy in the practice.
