Study Confirms Accuracy of Carestream Dental’s CS 3600 Intraoral Scanner

A study recently published in BioMed Central Oral Health confirms the accuracy of Carestream Dental’s CS 3600 intraoral scanner.

The study, “Accuracy of Four Intraoral Scanners in Oral Implantology: A Comparative In-Vitro Study,” found the CS 3600 performed best in trueness, according to a press release. It also found there were no significant differences in precision among the four intraoral scanners tested.

Trueness is the “ability of a measurement to match the actual value of the quantity being measured,” while precision is the “ability of a measurement to be consistently repeated.” Both are required for an accurate scan.

Two gypsum testing models were scanned with a laboratory scanner during the study. One model was partially edentulous with three implant analogues and one was fully edentulous with six implant analogues. Each model was scanned five times by the four scanners. The datasets were reverse engineered by superimposing the scans onto the reference models to determine trueness. To determine precision, the scans were superimposed onto each other in groups.

According to the study, “significant differences in trueness were found among the scanners.” The researchers indicated these differences could impact clinical implications. The CS 3600 captured the truest scans of both the partially edentulous and fully edentulous models.
