The Top 10 Dental Products of 2015

As we do every year, we conclude our year in review series with a look at the most popular products on Dentalcompare. This list includes every product on the site, and these rankings are completely based on the number of times each product was visited during 2015.*

While most of the other lists we compile each year look at the newest products and industry trends, this list is a bigger picture view of the industry as a whole. Some products stay on this list year in and year out because clinicians continue to express interest in learning about them. Sometimes it’s obvious why that is, but with some products, the staying power and long-term interest remains a mystery.

Here are your Top 10 Dental Products of 2015:

PlanScan Intraoral Scanner10. PlanScan Intraoral Scanner from Planmeca – Digital impression systems continue to gain popularity as more dentists invest in digital platforms to increase efficiency and improve the patient experience. This system from Planmeca saw several updates during 2015 including a new configuration that integrates the scanner with a Planmeca chair and delivery system and a software update that gives PlanScan the ability to capture color digital impressions. Additionally, the open-architecture scanner gained the ability to work with 3Shape’s Dental System CAD software, making this scanner even more versatile and flexible in how it can be implemented in a dental practice.

SuniRay 29. SuniRay 2 Digital Intraoral Sensor from Suni Medical Imaging – Digital sensors are now a mature category, and the ability to capture digital x-rays is something many practices now use to provide better and more efficient care to their patients. Digital x-rays reduce a patient’s radiation exposure, and the SuniRay 2 works at some of the industry’s lowest radiation levels. Besides the patient safety benefits, this is a popular sensor option because of its high quality images and easy workflow.

EyeZoom Dental Loupes8. EyeZoom Dental Loupes from Orascoptic – Magnification helps clinicians see more as they diagnose and treat patients while also helping them practice from an ergonomic position. But while this is a mature category of products that many clinicians couldn’t work without, innovation in the area has often focused on comfort and style. This new loupe system changed all of that by allowing clinicians to adjust the magnification levels in their loupes for the first time. It’s an exciting development that makes an already essential product even more intriguing.

Solea7. Solea Dental Laser from Convergent Dental – Making hard tissue lasers exciting again was not an easy task, but with its groundbreaking CO2 laser technology, the Solea is grabbing the attention of numerous clinicians and making them give the category another look. But while its launch in 2014 was big news, Convergent Dental is not sitting back. Numerous new innovations for the system rolled out in 2015 including a new handpiece, new laser spot sizes, updated software for faster hard tissue cutting, specialized tips for laser periodontal treatments and FDA approval for osseous tissue applications. This laser is at the forefront of clinical technology, and it’s not waiting around for any other systems to catch up.

Mouthwatch Intraoral Camera6. Mouthwatch Intraoral Camera from Mouthwatch LLC – The most popular new product of 2015 is also the 6th most popular product overall. Mouthwatch’s camera doesn’t bring new features to this product category, but its affordable price point certainly draws plenty of attention. Not only does the camera capture high quality diagnostic images and easily connect to a range of leading imaging software titles, it makes it possible to put a camera in every operatory. The next step for this camera is to encourage greater use of tele-dentistry, and the manufacturer’s software is designed to make it simple to capture images in one location and review them in another.

Riva5. Riva Self-Cure Glass Ionomer Restorative Material from SDI – Every year a handful of the products on this list are difficult to explain. There’s nothing new about this glass ionomer restorative from SDI, and the category is not an area that has experienced a host of recent innovation. Still, clinicians like glass ionomers because they don’t shrink like composites, they make a good choice for replacing dentin, and they release fluoride after placement. Riva Self-Cure is available in a range of kits and shades, making it a useful system to have in a practice.

IRM ZOE4. IRM ZOE Intermediate Restorative Material from DENTSPLY Caulk – Temporary cements continue to hit the market, aiming to provide clinicians with a reliable way to place restorations that will need removed when it is time to place a permanent solution. While not the newest temporary adhesive around, IRM ZOE is the most popular, and it’s a system designed to work in a range of clinical situations.

CS 35003. CS 3500 Digital Impression System from Carestream Dental – The second digital impression system to appear on this list is the most popular system in the category. Another open-architecture option, the CS 3500 also saw new updates and integrations in 2015. A software update brought HD quality 3D color images to the system. In addition, this scanner from Carestream Dental took home an Edison Award for product innovation. Digital impressions is a category that continues to grow in interest and importance, and Carestream Dental’s system is an intriguing option.

Epic 102.  Epic 10 Diode Laser from BIOLASE – Soft tissue lasers are always among the most popular product categories on Dentalcompare, and for the past few years this system from BIOLASE is the top choice in that category. Diode lasers allow clinicians to provide a range of soft tissue treatments, and this is one of the most versatile and powerful options among these lasers. While BIOLASE has already launched the Epic X as a successor to this system, the Epic 10 remains the most viewed dental laser on Dentalcompare.

CollaPlug1. CollaPlug Absorbable Collagen Wound Dressing from Zimmer Dental – The champion’s reign continues. Every year this collagen dressing for use during extractions, biopsies and other surgical situations comes out at or near the top of this list. Its popularity and staying power remain a mystery, but whatever it is doing keeps on working, so there’s no need to change a thing.

*The 2015 Top 10 lists are based on Dentalcompare traffic measured during the 13 month period from November 1, 2014 – November 30 2015.
