First and foremost a product needs to perform the task it was created to accomplish. If it can do that with a bit of style, that’s even better.

When it comes to design, the adage “form follows function” often rings true, but when form enhances function, that’s design taken to the next level. An outstanding product design can either make the item impossible to miss, or so well adapted to its appointed task it melts right into the activity.

Like any product designers, the makers of dental products put plenty of thought into how their creations look. A well designed product can capture the attention of a patient and spark questions that can enhance care. Conversely a product can be equally well designed so as to melt into the background, never noticed by the patient, but always appreciated by the clinician.

But for many, the design goes completely unnoticed. If the product does its job, then the clinician and patient are both happy, often missing how the design helped accomplish the task. That’s where the GOOD DESIGN Awards come in. Presented annually by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies, the awards recognize the best in product design, packaging and graphics.

The 2012 GOOD DESIGN awards included a number of dental products that all stand out and blend in for different reasons. Here are the dental products taking home awards this year:

Air Techniques – Mojave Dry Vac

Mojave

This is the perfect example of something that needs to get the job done, but does so with some extra style. It’s likely patients or staff won’t regularly need to look at your vacuum system, but if it looks like this, why hide it in a closet?

Dental Photonics – Alta MLS

Alta MLS

This modular laser system is a compact package with a bright touchscreen display and a nicely integrated handle for moving it around. Set on a counter with the display on, this unit is sure to get patients asking about what it can do for them.

Dürr Dental – Vista Scan Mini Plus Image Plate Scanner

Vista Scan Mini

A clean and simple design make this plate scanner fade into the background. It looks high-tech without being imposing. The shape and size allow this unit to be an unobtrusive operatory presence.

Ivoclar Vivadent – bluephase Style LED Curing Light

bluephase Style

This slim curing light certainly lives up to its name. Sleek and shaped to fit easily in the clinician’s hand, the black, white and gray body color adds a touch of pop. The controls are easy to reach, but unobtrusive, giving this light a streamlined and efficient look.

Philips Sonicare – Airfloss

Airfloss

This hygiene tool looks like it would be right at home in outer space,  and making a homecare tool look attractive certainly helps make people want to use it.

Philips Sonicare – DiamondClean Power Toothbrush

DiamondClean

Philips Sonicare's line of power toothbrushes has helped many patients improve their homecare regimens. This latest version slims everything down, adds in-case charging and looks as clean as it gets teeth.
