The Turbo 25/30 is a magnetostrictive ultrasonic scaler marketed by Parkell. It is advertised as having two unique features. It is purported to accept both 25- and 30-KHz inserts as well as any tip designed for Cavitron scalers, and it has a button-activated “Turbo Power Boost” feature which is purported to be easier to use than a traditional control-knob. The Turbo 25/30 unit dimensions are 1.75” H x 5.5” W x 7.0” D. It weighs 32 oz. and comes with a 7-ft handpiece hose, a 7-ft footswitch cable and a 7-ft water hose. Standard equipment also includes two autoclavable handpiece sheaths. The Turbo 25/30 is available in both 110/230 V electrical power configurations and is compatible with both 50 and 60 Hz.
During the clinical evaluation the compact, inexpensive Turbo 25/30 was found to be user-friendly and simple to operate, with easily adjusted controls and power settings. It provided reliable performance and was easy to clean and disinfect. The unit effectively removed calculus and the “Turbo Power Boost” provided a quick increase in functional power level to remove more resistant calculus, while allowing a subsequent return to the prior power level. Ultrasonic inserts, regardless of manufacturer and KHz designation, were found to be easily interchanged. A medication/irrigation accessory unit is available. Waterlines can be disinfected per manufacturer’s guidelines.
Evaluators found the high-pitched noise generated by the unit to be objectionable. The tips that were standard equipment with the unit were too large to provide good access to all areas.
