The Lava™ Chairside Oral Scanner C.O.S. from 3M ESPE is a digital impression system that provides a powerful new connection between a doctor and their dental lab. Featuring proprietary 3D-in-Motion technology that is unique to the dental industry, the Lava C.O.S. allows doctors to capture and simultaneously view continuous 3D video images to create precise digital impressions. Doctors can assess their preparation and margin using several review features unique to digital dentistry. Due to enhanced communication with the lab, Lava C.O.S. doctors experience a 0.5% remake rate due to marginal fit versus a reported industry average of 2.7%. The doctor specifies either a traditional (PFM) or CAD/CAM restoration and sends the digital prescription to their lab for marking the margin and cutting the die on a virtual model. The process is complete once the lab receives an accurate and durable stereolithography (SLA) model for finishing and ships the final restoration back to the doctor. Seating times decreased on average by 41% with Lava C.O.S. single unit crowns when compared to traditional impression single unit crowns. In active regions any doctor who purchases the system can maintain and enhance their relationship with their existing lab and the lab has the option to get involved with no capital investment.
