Occlusal film is the largest size intraoral film available, and can be used for examining the arch of the maxilla and the mandible. The patient bites down on the film with the x-ray positioned either over the nose (for maxillary) or under the chin (for mandibular). The resulting x-ray captures the entire arch. This type of exam is often used to diagnose soft tissue of the cheek and lips, cartilage of the nose, and the nasal septum. Occlusal film is 57 mm x 76 mm and packaged in soft flexible vinyl packets.
