There is a new diode dental laser on the market—the SIROLaser by Sirona. Diode lasers are not new to dentistry, but what separates this laser from other dental diode lasers is that the SIROLaser is much more compact than comparable diode lasers, while providing optimum performance in periodontal, surgical, and endodontic procedures. It has a weight of 450 grams, and dimensions of 79 mm x 54mm x 190mm. That is just slightly larger than the remote control for your cable television. This compactness makes for easy transfer from operatory to operatory, and is very space-effective. And because the SIROLaser is so compact, it can be placed just about anywhere the dentist wants it.
SIROLaser has a wavelength of 970 nm +/- 10nm, power ranging from 0.5 watts-7 watts, with operating modes of continuous wave (CW), pulsated, and chopped. Continuous wave (CW) is a continuous, uninterrupted laser beam that provides very good power control. Pulsed power output is a very short treatment time (90-300 m) where the laser beam is pulsed (1,000-20,000 W) and has a longer cooling time. Chopped mode is where the laser beam is interrupted at regular intervals (50% ON and 50% OFF); the advantage of this mode is that it provides better thermal control.
SIROLaser’s periodontal and endodontic applications are removal of granulation tissue, sulcular debridement and sterilization, and pulpotomies. Contact surgical procedures performed by SIROLaser include gingivectomy, operculectomy, frenectomy, gingival contouring, implant uncovering, lesion removal, and troughing for impression taking, while providing the optimum in hemostasis. Contact use includes treatment of apthous ulcers, herpetic lesions, and tooth desensitization at the CEG.
The advantages of using this diode laser are precise cutting and removal of soft tissue, with slight damage to the surrounding tissue, excellent coagulation and hemostasis, maintaining a clear view to the operative field, low scarification, less post-operative or post-surgical discomfort, overall faster healing, and oftentimes local anesthesia is not required for treatment.
Besides its compact size and portability, SIROLaser has several other desirable features, such as an ergonomically shaped handpiece with a removable finger switch in addition to a foot switch. Also, the handpiece tips come in three angles (30o, 45o, and 60o), which make the entire oral cavity accessible. This slender, flexible laser fiber allows for optimum viewing of the treatment area. Also, SIROLaser has an easy to navigate menu and display that enables its operator to see all the parameters immediately.
SIROLaser comes complete with safety goggles for the dentist, assistant, and the patient, two handpieces, two fibers (200m/320m), six laser handpiece tips, finger switch, foot pedal, scissors, transport box, and 50 printed brochures on patient communication, for a retail price of just over $12,000.
