GC America’s FujiCEM is very good—and practical—for cementation of crowns. It is a resin-modified glass-ionomer luting cement. It has sustained fluoride release and very low film thickness. It is radiopaque, insoluble when set, and is non-irritating to the tooth and gingiva. It is dispensed from a small paste/paste cartridge with GC America’s unique dispenser. FujiCEM is indicated for the final cementation of metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, resin crowns, bridges, inlays, and ceramic inlays.

With new dental materials, one must trust the manufacturer’s research with regard to characteristics, specifications, and claims they make about their products. Dentists have to evaluate in a practical sense since we do not measure bond strengths, film thickness, and do not yet have our own long-term results. I have been using FujiCEM for a couple years now and I like it very much.

FujiCEM is a very easy and efficient cement to use. Two pastes are dispensed from the cartridge and mixed. The dispensing system allows for a minimal amount of cement to be administered, thereby reducing waste. An accurate ratio and consistent amount of cement is dispensed with every use. The dispensing unit has a volume adjustment feature, allowing it to be set to dispense the proper amount for a single unit or multiple units. The accurate dispensing leads to a nice, smooth mix.

The two pastes mix quickly—working time is good. The pastes are mixed for about ten seconds, applied to the restoration, and seated within thirty seconds. Cleaning the excess cement begins at one to one and a half minutes after seating restoration. The excess is cleaned at the gel stage. The excess cement comes off easily and very quickly. Final set is at just over five minutes.

FujiCEM has tremendous advantages over powder/liquid cements. Powder/liquid cements are time consuming and messy, and the inconsistent dispensing process can result in different consistencies of the cement and/or different setting times. With FujiCEM, there are no such variables, so a consistent, predictable mix is attained every time.

I have been impressed with FujiCEM because of its ease and speed of use. It is a simple system from start to finish. It takes about thirty seconds from the time you pull it out of the drawer to the time the restoration is in the mouth. Clean up is one minute later and is completed with minimal effort. FujiCEM has greatly reduced the time it takes me to dispense, seat, and clean the crown, and to dismiss the patient.
