Provisional Materials

Provisional Materials
Dental Provisional Materials While CAD/CAM dentistry makes it possible for patients to receive a final restoration in a single appointment, temporary crowns and bridges are still necessary in many clinical situations, and there are a range of provisional materials available to meet just about any clinical need. These materials are designed to look and function properly while being easy for clinicians to place and just as easy to remove. Provisional materials do not require the same durability as permanent restorative materials, but efficiency in material processing and ease of use are an important details to look into when exploring material options for temporary dental restorations.

What Types of Provisional Materials are Available for My Practice?

There are three main options when it comes to the materials used for fabricating provisional crowns and bridges. Direct provisional materials are used to fabricate the restoration directly in the patient’s mouth. Indirect provisional materials are used to create the temporary restoration off an impression or model. Premade provisional crowns are designed for fast and effective placement of temporary crowns. Provisional cements are designed to hold the temporary crown or bridge in place while also being easy to remove when it is time to place the permanent restoration. Lastly, provisional glazes are available to make sure temporary restorations look good while they are in place.

What to consider when selecting provisional materials?

Convenience, esthetics, and effectiveness are the key factors to look for in dental provisional materials. These materials must be up to the task of providing a suitable restoration both in esthetics and in function. Even when a crown or bridge will only be in place for a short time, patients need to be happy with their teeth. Temporaries should feel comfortable and stay where they are supposed to until the permanent crown or bridge can be placed. Be sure to look for materials with a shade system that will work in your practice.
