Caries detection is at the heart of the hygiene appointments that drive many general dental practices. Early detection leads to less invasive treatment for the patient, and technology has come a long way from the days when an explorer was the only tool in the box. Now there are a range of technologies, some using basic light fluorescence to help the clinician detect caries. But those systems are just the tip of the technology iceberg, as computers are now able to help clinicians "see" caries in the early stages. Here is a side by side look at some of the technologies currently available to help clinicians spot caries as early as possible.
