Orthodontic brackets are an integral part of traditional orthodontic braces. There are a many types of orthodontic brackets on the market, including ceramic brackets, cobalt chromium brackets, composite brackets, gold brackets, lingual brackets, plastic brackets, self ligating brackets, stainless steel brackets and titanium brackets. Self-ligating brackets are self-tying which can help reduce friction between the wire and the slot of the bracket. Lingual brackets are ideal when cosmetics are a concern and the patient does not want the braces to be visible. Titanium brackets are often used if a patient is allergic to nickel. Choosing a type of orthodontic bracket is based on a number of factors including severity of bite and tooth crookedness; required headgear or additional appliances; cost; time to be spent in braces and cosmetics.
