MouthWatch Announces TeleDent™ Mobile Dentistry Accelerator Award Winners

MouthWatch recently announced the five winners of the company’s TeleDent™ Mobile Dentistry Accelerator Awards.

The goal of the award is to help mobile dentistry programs relaunch after being shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a press release. For-profit and non-profit dentistry programs at any stage of development were eligible for the award.

“Our goal was to fast-track the rebound of innovative mobile dentistry programs with the greatest potential for increasing the access to oral care for the underserved, whether they are seniors in long term care, housebound patients, special needs individuals, the homeless, children with underserved oral health needs, or the uninsured,” MouthWatch Founder and CEO Brant Herman said, according to the release.

The five winners are:

1. Appalachian Miles for Smiles / Virginia and Tennessee

This non-profit operates three dental tractor trailers to serve uninsured and underinsured residents in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. In the past five years they have provided more than $3 million of free dental care to substance abusers with dental pain, the homeless, veterans living on the street, and undocumented children, without turning away anyone in need. The dental team consists of a few staff members and many volunteers who serve 10 counties.

2. Everlasting Smiles 4 U / Washington State

Paula Nguyen, RDH, a solo practitioner, provides oral care to homebound and bed bound patients who live in private homes, nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout Washington. Nguyen also works in private practice as an employee and travels up to 3 hours each way to provide care with Everlasting Smiles 4U on weekends.

3. In Motion Dentists / California

In this privately owned company, Dr. Banner and his team provide dentist house call services to special needs and elderly residents in LA County, Orange County, San Bernardino County and Riverside County. The team at In Motion Dentists provides dental treatment to those who cannot visit a traditional office setting because of physical, developmental and mental challenges.

4. Minnesota Community Care / Minnesota

The largest FQHC in the state provides oral care to the homeless with 50 employees and fourth-year dental students from the University of Minnesota. MCC also operates three dental clinics and uses Advanced Dental Therapists to provide care in an outreach setting. The goal is to increase access to care at satellite locations for the homeless population.

5. Prevent Dental Caries Project  (PDC) / Utah

The mission of PDC is to increase access to dental care and to prevent dental decay before it occurs through education and early intervention. Through collaborative agreements between dental hygienists and dentists and the use of teledentistry, PDC is bringing diagnostic preventive services to high-risk patients wherever they are.

Award winners receive a 12-month license of the TeleDent all-in-one teledentistry platform for five users, a $1,848.00 value, along with comprehensive training and onboarding for the entire mobile dentistry team by an experienced MouthWatch teledentistry specialist. MouthWatch will promote the mobile health programs through social media, press releases and published case studies. Winners also receive a MouthWatch Intraoral Camera, 500 OptiClear™ intraoral camera sleeves, a MouthWatch Intraoral Camera wall mount or counter mount, one free individual annual membership to the American Mobile & Teledentistry Alliance, and a copy of the workbook on teledentistry profitability, “Pathways to Prosperity” by Patti DiGangi, RDH, and Cindy Purdy, RDH.
