Enhanced Dental Product: CS Model+ v5 from Carestream Dental

Carestream Dental’s new CS Model+ v5 uses advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) to offer clinicians a variety of new features. It is part of the company’s CAD/CAM portfolio CS Solutions, which lets dentists combine the technologies that work best for their practices and patients.

The update makes it possible for clinicians to design clear aligners in-office, according to a press release. The intuitive software also offers “degree of difficulty” case ranking, automatically generated intermediate treatment steps, interproximal reduction (IPR) suggestions, and a library of attachments.

To help with treatment planning, CS Model+ v5 uses AI to rank a case’s degree of difficulty. The case complexity index uses an easy-to-understand color code system to guide dentists through cases based on their level of difficulty. Green cases are simple and straightforward while red cases are outside the clinically proven capabilities of aligners.

The color-coded teeth on the virtual model makes it easier for clinicians to explain to patients why their case might call for more traditional methods. If patients are good candidates for clear aligners, the model can play a video that shows how their treatment will progress.

The software automates much of a case, reducing the need for manual input. It also automatically generates intermediate treatment steps based on clinician-indicated constraints, eliminating the need to manually create each step. Clinicians can preview models and the complexity of each step in an editable gallery.

If attachments are needed for a clear aligner case, the software provides a library with different options for rotation, extrusion-intrusion, torque, and combined movements. After a tooth is clicked on, the attachment is automatically placed in the center and can be moved or modified as needed. Clinicians can place or remove attachments at any stage of treatment.

Doctors can send designs to a lab or print in-house with a third-party 3D printer. 3D Systems, SprintRay, RapidShape and Formlabs are all validated for use with CS Model+ to fabricate aligners in-house.
