American Academy of Periodontology Publishes New Disease Staging and Classifications

With the publication of the official proceedings from a 2017 workshop, the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) provided an update to the disease classification system for periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions.

The update applies to the system established at a 1999 international workshop and includes recategorization of some forms of periodontitis, a new grading system for periodontitis and a new classification system for peri-implant diseases and conditions, according to a press release. The new periodontitis staging system can be used to indicate the severity of the disease and the complexity of managing the condition for a specific patient. The grading system uses additional patient information to estimate the likelihood of the disease progressing. The new system also defines three forms of the condition: periodontitis, necrotizing periodontitis, and periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic conditions.

In the new staging system, Stage I is the least severe and Stage IV is the most severe, while the grading system includes Grade A for patients with a low risk of disease progression, Grade B for moderate risk and Grade C for high-risk patients. This new systems is designed to provide a framework for treatment planning and patient monitoring.

The new peri-implant disease classification system is the first of its kind. It takes into account physical symptoms to help clinicians identify and plan care for patients with disease issues around dental implant sites.
