Study Rates Dentsply Sirona’s Celtra Duo Chairside CAD/CAM Materials as Highest in Fracture Toughness

The University of Toronto recently released a study rating Dentsply Sirona’s Celtra Duo (ZLS) chairside CAD/CAM materials as the highest in fracture toughness (KIC).

Celtra Duo was compared to five other CAD/CAM materials used for crown fabrication, according to a press release.

The study, titled “Fracture toughness of chairside CAD/CAM materials – Alternative loading approach for compact tension test,” was published in the July issue of Dental Materials, which is the official publication of The Academy of Dental Materials.

Researchers applied a modified compact tension (CT) test to measure each material’s fracture toughness. The restorative CAD/CAM materials tested included ceramics and nanoceramic resin composite materials.

Celtra Due (ZLS) showed a substantial increase in fracture toughness after firing. The mean KIC values of the tested materials varied, and none were able to reach the mean KIC of natural dentin.
