Study Finds The Canary System Accurately Detects Caries Around Amalgam Margins

A recent study found The Canary System from Quantum Dental Technologies more accurately detects caries under intact margins of amalgam restorations than both visual examination and other systems on the market.

The results were presented at the 63rd Congress of the European Organisation for Caries Research (ORCA) in Athens, Greece, according to a press release. Detecting caries beneath intact amalgam margins is difficult because amalgam is dense, radiopaque and reflects light from its surface. The Canary System was able to detect 95 percent of the lesions around the amalgam margins.

One of the other caries detection devices studied didn’t identify any caries, while the second detected between 45 and 74 percent of the lesions, depending on the distance from the margin. No caries we detected through visual examination.
