Image Gently Campaign Promotes Safer Imaging for Young Patients

The Image Gently campaign is now offering educational and scientific materials to help dental professionals reduce radiation exposure to young patients.

The American Dental Association is a part of the Image Gently Alliance, which is working to educate the public and health care professionals about the best approaches for using radiographic imaging with younger patients. The recommendations for dental imaging line up with the ALARA principle of As Low As Reasonably Achievable, according to a press release.

The campaign urges dental professionals to use the lowest possible dosage when capturing X-rays of pediatric patients, and cone beam 3D imaging should only be used when necessary for diagnostic purposes. Additional recommendations include the use of imaging protocol appropriate collimation for all radiation beams and the use of thyroid shields during all imaging.
