Designed around a patented transillumination technology, CariVu from DEXIS is a compact caries detection system capable of helping clinicians identify occlusal, interproximal, secondary or recurrent carious lesions, as well as cracks.
With the light source and other electronics housed in light-weight handpiece, CariVu makes use of flexible, autoclavable tips to capture transilluminated images that can find lesions earlier than on an x-ray, according to a press release. A near infrared light is used for the scans to turn the healthy tooth structure transparent while decay appears as dark areas.
The system is designed to work seamlessly with DEXIS software allowing caries detection images to be stored along with other patient images in the patient record. This allows the images to be shown to patients side by side with intraoral camera images or other diagnostic imaging for patient education or shared with insurance or referral partners.
