A-dec Celebrates 50 Years of Manufacturing Dental Equipment

Since it was founded in 1964 by husband and wife team Ken and Joan Austin, A-dec has grown steadily, and as the company begins the celebration of its 50th anniversary this year, it is an established global leader known for creating innovative dental operatory equipment and fostering a culture of “quality through caring.”

The company plans to mark the anniversary throughout 2014, with the celebration concluding in February 2015 which will be the 50th anniversary of the Austins drawing their first paychecks as A-dec employees. While today A-dec employs more than 1,000 people with authorized dealers in more than 100 countries, and facilities in the United Kingdom, Australia and China along with its 50-acre headquarters in Newberg, Ore., it began in the Austin’s Broomfield, Colo. home when the couple patented and produced the dental industry’s first vacuum saliva ejector.

The company has built its brand and reputation by striving to improve the way dental professionals can work while treating, “every customer as if he or she were our last,” Ken Austin remarked in a press release.

A-dec began innovating with the development of compact delivery systems before expanding its offerings to include dentist and patient seating, and operatory lights by 1977, and in 1983 it began offering operatory cabinetry.

Other major product innovations from A-dec include the 2004 launch of the A-dec 500 chair which features a chair-mounted delivery arm, and the 2009 launch of the more streamlined A-dec 300.  More recent product innovations include the 2012 launch of the award winning A-dec LED operatory light, and the 2013 launch of the A-dec 400 patient chair.

Beyond the dental products, A-dec has cultivated a culture of caring and philanthropy. The company runs an equipment donation program along with programs supporting the Red Cross, the United Way, and its TotaChair partnership with Rota-Dent which helps bring portable dental equipment around the world to treat underserved populations.
