Convergent Dental announced that is has received FDA clearance for its Solea dental laser, a CO2 laser system capable of performing both hard and soft tissue applications.

Solea is a 9.3 µm CO2 Computer Aided Preparation (CAP) dental laser system that uses pulsed energy to safely cut hard tissues as well as perform incision, excision, vaporization, coagulation and hemostasis of soft tissues, according to a press release. The laser operates silently and designed to replace the dental handpiece for a range of procedures.

The Solea’s 9.3 µm wavelength is different than other soft tissue CO2 lasers and allows it to cut tissue more precisely and efficiently. It is controlled via a foot pedal much like a traditional highspeed handpiece, and the laser’s mirrors can move 10,000 per second for precise cutting control.
