 AAP and EFP Release Reports, Recommendations About the Oral-Systemic Link

A recently published series of reports from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) analyze research the research into the connections between periodontal disease and other systemic conditions, and provide treatment recommendations for dental professionals.

The reports appear in both the Journal of Periodontology and the Journal of Clinical Periodontology and include details on the connections between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes and other conditions, according to a press release.

Recommendations in the reports include discussing other cardiovascular risk factors with patients being treated for periodontal disease while following American Heart Association guidelines when treating patients who already have cardiovascular conditions. For patients with diabetes, regular periodontal screenings and treatment are recommended because this has been shown to be beneficial.

Other details from the report include recommendations on treating pregnant patients for periodontal diseases and recommendations for further research on the connections between periodontal disease and a range of other systemic conditions.
