Novel Dental Implant Coating Speeds Osseointegration

Aimed at making dental implants more accessible to patients with bone deficits from smoking, osteoporosis diabetes or other compromising health conditions, researchers from the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) in Castellón have developed a new biodegradable implant coating to speed osseointegration and enhance biocompatibility.

Named the Soldent project, the dental implant prototype developed by the research team features a coating that dissolves upon contact with bone and releases silicon and other bioactive molecules that induce bone generation, according to a press release.

The project has moved through in vitro testing in cell cultures and live animal testing to determine which prototype produced the best results. The next phase is clinical trials, and the hope is to have a commercial dental implant product ready within 2 or 3 years.
