Study Finds Iodine Mouthwash Fights Gingivitis, Lowers Cholesterol

A recent clinical trial of a new oral rinse containing iodine found the mouthwash was not only effective at fighting gingivitis, but also lowered LDL cholesterol rates.

The mouthwash, a soon be launched product called iCLEAN created by Biomedical Development Corporation, is a once-a-day, 30-second oral rinse with a proprietary formula containing iodine. A 3-month phase II clinical trial of the rinse funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute tracked the oral health and other biological markers of inflammation, and it found oral rinse users showed significantly lower LDL cholesterol levels than a placebo group, according to a press release.

Further clinical trials are underway to confirm both results of the phase II trial. Dr. Charles Gauntt, the principal investigator for the phase II trial, said in the press release that he hopes further study not only confirms the effectiveness of this mouthwash, but helps shed more light on the connection between healthy oral tissues and overall health.
