An Analysis by the American Dental Association Shows Flat Spending on Dentistry Since 2008

While per patient dental spending by Baby Boomers continues to increase, a new analysis from the American Dental Association finds that overall spending on dental care remains flat.

A pair of research briefs released by the ADA’s Health Policy Resources Center show adult dental visits declined between 2000 and 2010, leading to less spending on dental care. These declines predate the economic recession which began in 2008, according to a press release.

Since 2008 the per capita dental expenditure growth rate declined by 0.3 percent, despite a 1.6 percent increase in spending on overall health. The research finds that while senior citizens are spending more on dental care and children are visiting dentists more frequently, fewer adults are making annual visits.
