Dental Organizations Mark Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Promote Oral Cancer Examinations

During the observance of the 14th Annual Oral Cancer Awareness Month in April, the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP), American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and the American Dental Association (ADA) are joining with the Oral Cancer Foundation (OCF) to promote regular oral cancer examinations as a part of routine dental visits.

The organizations are hoping to raise awareness that examinations during regular dental visits can catch oral health changes early when cancers are most treatable, according to a press release. Additionally, the organizations are promoting signs patients can watch out for in between visits such as sores or irritations that do not go away within 2 weeks, difficulty chewing or swallowing, or changes in occlusion.

More information about oral cancer diagnosis and treatment can be found at the Oral Cancer Foundation’s Website.
