Dental Anesthesia Could Halt Development of Wisdom Teeth

The development of lower wisdom teeth might be interrupted after children between the ages of 2 and 6 are given local dental anesthesia injections, according to research published in the April issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association.

The study, conducted at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, found a statistical association between anesthesia injections and missing lower wisdom teeth. Researchers compared x-rays of patients treated in the Tufts pediatric dental clinic and found those who had received injections of anesthesia were more than 4 times as likely to have missing lower wisdom teeth, according to a press release.

The research team believes more research needs to be conducted into this connection in order to determine if there is a simple, safe way to prevent the development of wisdom teeth, thus saving patients from having to have those teeth surgically removed if they develop with impactions or other common wisdom tooth problems.
