American Academy of Periodontology Issues Report on Peri-Implant Disease

The American Academy of Periodontology published a report in the current issue of the Journal of Periodontology reviewing current research on peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis, and providing guidance for diagnoses and prevention of the conditions.

Titled, “Peri-Implant Mucositis and Peri-Implantitis: A Current Understanding of Their Diagnoses and Clinical Implications”, the report cites research showing Peri-Implant Mucositis could be present in close to half of all implant patients, and while the prevalence of Peri-Implantitis is less settled, it could be present in more than one-third of implant patients, according to a press release.

The report provides key details for clinicians to be aware of including the background of both conditions, diagnoses, risk factors and suggestions for care following diagnosis. A statement from the AAP about Peri-Implant diseases is available at http://www.joponline.org/doi/full/10.1902/jop.2013.134001.
