Cigna Study Shows Treating Periodontal Disease Leads to Better Health, Lower Healthcare Costs

A three-year study conducted by Cigna shows that treating periodontal disease has the potential to reduce trips to the hospital and emergency room while lowering overall medical costs.

The study, which was presented at the recent International Association for Dental Research (IADR) meeting in Seattle, looked at periodontal patients between 2009 and 2011 and found patients who received perio treatments had a 67% lower hospital admission rate, 54% fewer emergency room visits and had annual medical costs more than $1,000 lower than those who did not get treatment, according to a press release.

The study furthers the way the link between periodontal disease and overall health can be used to create evidence-based treatment standards that could help improve health and reduce costs, according to Dr. Robert Genco, who serves on Cigna’s Dental Clinical Advisory Panel.
