New Dental Product: CS Solutions Chairside CAD/CAM from Carestream Dental

Designed to provide clinicians with options when transitioning to digital restorative workflows, CS Solutions CAD/CAM from Carestream Dental is an open architecture system with two scanning options, customized software and a chairside mill.

Announced by Carestream during the 2013 International Dental Show, CS Solutions will likely be available in the fall. The system consists of scanning via either the new CS 3500 Intraoral Scanner or the CS 9000 3D or CS 9300 CBCT, restoration design via the CS Restore software platform and milling via CS 3000 Milling Machine. The modular system is set up to allow clinicians to do complete chairside CAD/CAM restorations, just chairside scanning and design with milling at a dental lab, or just chairside scanning with design and milling completed at a dental lab, according to a press release and information on Carestream’s website.

The CS 3500 scanner connects to a PC via USB and provides 3D color digital impressions at a resolution of up to 30 microns without the need for powdering the dentition. Scans are open architecture and can be sent to the CS Restore software or other open dental CAD applications such as Dental Wings, exocad or 3Shape’s Dental System. Different scanner tip sizes are available, and the scanner provides a light guidance system to allow clinicians to focus on the patient instead of the computer screen while scanning.

Alternatively, the CS Solutions system allows traditional physical impressions to be digitized using either the CS 9000 3D or CS 9300 CBCT system. Impressions captured with any silicon impression material can be digitized in as little as 45 seconds, and because only the impression is scanned the patient is not exposed to radiation. The impression scans can then be imported into any open CAD software.

The new CS Restore CAD software is designed to provide an intuitive digital workflow with automated margin tracing, tooth design and occlusion management. Tooth proposals are based on analysis of the entire arch and antagonist, and clinicians can customize the suggested restorations before sending the case to the mill.

The CS 3000 Milling Machine features a 4-axis brushless motor that guides one tool to quickly create monolithic crowns from all-ceramic, hybrid-ceramic and resin-based materials. The system is capable of milling single crowns, inlays and onlays.
