Straumann Wins German Court Fight, Forces Competitor to Retract Claims About Implant Hydrophilicity

A German court sided with Straumann in a suit against Medentis Medical, ruling that Medentis must retract its claims that its ICX-templant implants are hydrophilic.

Straumann brought the claim after testing the Medentis implant and finding it to actually be hydrophobic with a contact angle greater than 90°, according to a press release. The tests were done to protect the market from imitators of the Straumann SLActive technology which in preclinical and clinical trials has been shown to enhance osseointegration and shorten healing times.

While Medentis originally contested the injunction, the court did not find its supporting evidence to be sufficient, and Medentis eventually withdrew its appeal, allowing the injunction to take effect.
