Dental Anesthesiologists Get National Uniform Claim Committee Provider Code

A new provider taxonomy code recognizing Dentist Anesthesiologists as a specialty was introduced at the start of this year by the National Uniform Claim Committee (NUCC), an organization chaired and hosted by the American Medical Association that is responsible for establishing national standards of content and data definitions for non-institutional health care in the United States.

The new code, 1223D0004X, defines a Dentist Anesthesiologist as “a dentist who has successfully completed an accredited postdoctoral anesthesiology residency training program for dentists of two or more years duration, in accord with Commission on Dental Accreditation’s Standards for Dental Anesthesiology Residency Programs, and/or meets the eligibility requirements for examination by the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology.”

The new code is important because it will help with insurance claims filed by dentist anesthesiologists who often provide treatment to children with severe caries or other developmental conditions, according to a press release from the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists.

The new provider code puts Dentist Anesthesiologist alongside other recognized specialties including Dental Public Health, Endodontics, General Practice, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Prosthodontics, according to the release.
